Linking Arms Together: American Indian Treaty Visions of Law and Peace, 1600-1800 by Williams, Robert A., Jr., In this readable yet sophisticated survey of treaty-making between Native and European Americans before 1800, Robert A. Williams, Jr. argues that Native Americans were active participants in the crafting of a shared legal culture. Legal historians have too often depicted Indians as merely acted upon by the white man's laws and institutions. In contrast, Williams looks at the numerous treaties Indians actively negotiated with whites and explores how they drew on their own unique traditions of diplomacy to resist and even influence the conduct of European law. Linking Arms Together recovers a deeper understanding of how Indians tried to forge a new society with whites on the multicultural frontiers of North America -- an understanding that may enlighten our own task of protecting Native American rights and imagining racial justice.
North American Indian Games by Madelyn Klein Anderson, An excellent introduction to Native American studies, Indians of the Americas weaves together the people, culture, traditions, crafts, food, history, and struggle for survival of some of the first groups to call America home. Fascinating and comprehensive, each book in the series draws from primary source materials as well as historical archives to address the topics most frequently covered in social studies and American history curricula.
Mitchell Museum of the American Indian - The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is the only museum in the Chicago-area that focuses exclusively on the history, culture and arts of North American native peoples. French and Indian War - The French and Indian War is the common American name for the decisive nine-year conflict (1754–1763) in North America between the Kingdom of Great Britain and its North American Colonies against France and its North American Colonies, which was one of the theatres of the Seven Years' War. The war resulted in France's loss of all its possessions in North America, except for some Caribbean islands and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, two small islands off Newfoundland. Stickball (Native American) - Stickball, known as the "little brother of war", is a North American Indian sport played by many tribes. The Choctaw and other tribes such as the Cherokee and the Iroquois still play this ancient game. Indian Wars - Indian Wars is the name used by historians in the United States to describe a series of conflicts between the United States and Native American peoples ("Indians") of North America. Also generally included in this term are those Colonial American wars with Native Americans that preceeded the creation of the United States.
